RURAL DRIVING |
Getting around Virginia in a vehicle requires the ability to
drive in widely varying situations. One errand may cover
three distinct road types: freeway, open highway, and city
street. You need to know the rigors and rules of each
environment in order to be a safe driver.

CITY DRIVING
Whether you're driving in Alexandria or in Bristol, there are
certain things you need to do, to be aware of, when you drive in a
city. You are sharing the road, in close quarters, with many other
drivers, all of you trying to get somewhere, usually in a hurry.
The most important difference you have to adjust for is reduced
space. You are going to be making decisions quickly, and you're
going to have to allow for shorter reaction distances.
AVOIDING HAZARDS
The best thing you can do, to compensate for this compression,
is SLOW DOWN. You will have more time to find the building
you're looking for; more time to react to the decisions of
other drivers; more time to make your own decisions; and more
time to avoid hazards.
To give yourself as much time as possible to plan and react,
look ahead of your immediate location. If you're looking
ahead, you'll see that malfunctioning signal; you'll notice
the construction zone before you're in it; you'll catch a
glimpse of the courier weaving between parked cars. The more
you can anticipate, the better able you'll be at avoiding
problems.
