But as he entered the freeway, Mike decided this was his unlucky day. The traffic was moving more slowly than usual, due to road construction that he was sure was only an excuse to make people mad and take more tax money. He was completely forgetting that he'd read in the newspaper how, if the roads weren't widened soon, in 10 years there would be so many people that driving from the suburbs to downtown, instead of taking 30 minutes as it did now, would take more than an hour. They never finish this stuff, he thought. They just keep pretending to fix things, while I watch the crew stand around doing nothing all day. Mike whipped into the next lane only inches behind a pickup truck, ignoring the squeal of wheels from other drivers having to hit their brakes quickly. The construction foreman waved his warning flag as several workers had to jump out of the way of Mike's car. Again, one driver honked her horn at Mike, shaking her head in disbelief.

"Should have been paying attention, lady," Mike grumbled, before spotting an opportunity and swerving into the middle lane.
