The speed limit was 35 mph, but Jack decided to go no faster than 30. He also remembered that kids were still arriving at the nearby elementary school. Jack smiled at the crossing guard, and stopped at the crosswalk as she carefully waved a few youngsters through.

Jack's mind raced ahead to what was facing him at the office today. The agency's owner, Mr. Taylor, was great to work for – but Mr. Taylor was away and had left his marketing director, Alex Wilson, in charge. Alex treated Jack like a personal servant when the boss wasn't around. He tried to calm down and remember that he always did his job, and never argued with Alex no matter how frustrated he was.

Jack drove to the downtown area, keeping the radio low and his attention on the road. Alex wasn't going to turn him into a careless driver. Suddenly, a teenager in a small truck swerved quickly in front of Jack, cutting him off and very nearly hitting his bumper. Jack thought a few unsavory words, but paid attention to braking carefully instead. He decided the kid needed "personal space," and increased his following distance to well over three seconds.
