Melissa had been looking forward to her date with Andy all week. It had been a long one – her boss had spent every day hovering over her team to finish a project for an important client. But finally it was over, and she was glad to be finished. She was meeting Andy at 8:00; he’d even made a reservation at their favorite restaurant. Melissa would have just enough time to change and freshen up.

She got home and went right to the mini-bar to pour a drink. Just one before I go, she thought. As she poured the liquor, Melissa realized that she was hungry too, but decided to ignore that for now. So she downed her drink in a few quick gulps, also ignoring the fact that it made her head spin a little.

At 7:45 it was already beginning to get dark outside and Melissa rushed out of her apartment and into the parking lot. She had been on schedule until she'd spilled something on her blouse and had to change into another outfit. The traffic would be busier now than it had all week, and Melissa hated being late. Melissa felt a little lightheaded, but decided she was just hungry, and quickly began to back out of the space.

Suddenly, she heard a loud honk and squealing tires and managed to slam on her brakes – just in time to see a neighbor man swerve around her. With her window down, she heard the man yell, "Hey, lady, a tail light might help there!" Melissa had forgotten that her right tail light was out. Embarrassed, she gave the man plenty of time to exit the parking lot before continuing on and thought that she would fix the light tomorrow. Right now, she was late.
